When we first discovered L'Auberdiere in 2010, it had been the home of our neighbour's grandparents for their entire life. Originally it was the farmhouse at the centre of a much larger farm. In the early twentieth century a new farmhouse was built across the laneway where it still operates today.
L'Auberdiere was stuck in a time warp and it was hard to comprehend how an elderly couple had lived with the extremely basic facilities at the house. Though we have since gained a far greater appreciation and understanding of just how tough and resourceful the people of rural Normandie are.
When we first arrived at L'Auberdiere and made our way into the house, the overwhelming sensation was that the house was talking to us and beckoning us to embrace it and help it to become a home once more. It was -5 degrees celsius outside and night was drawing in fast, yet when we crossed the threshold and closed the front door behind us we felt safe and at home. The unbelievably thick stone walls that had protected occupants of the house over the centuries, instantly shielded us from the weather outside, as if the house was wrapping it's arms around us in a warm embrace. This may seem a touch sentimental to many, yet if you have ever had any experience of the way in which historic buildings talk to you, you will understand what we mean!
The following spring we set about the renovation of L'Auberdiere with the overwhelming desire to retain as much of the original charm and substance of the house, yet ensuring it was a warm and homely base from which to explore the wonders of Calvados and the wider Normandie region. We did not want to change the layout of the original farmhouse in any way, out of respect for the history of this building and it's importance in the lives and heritage of our neighbours who have farmed dairy cattle on this land for centuries. As a result, what we have created is a crisp and modern adaptation of what is at it's core, an 18th Century Calvadosian fermette.
Today L'Auberdiere is a contemporary, comfortable, warm and inviting home, nestled sympathetically within the same stone walls that have sheltered countless generations over the centuries. The peace and tranquility, only found in the heart of the bocage, provides our guests the opportunity to truly escape from the hustle and stresses of the modern world, yet with fast WiFi, satellite Television and exceptional transport links you can choose how and when you dip in and out of the modern world.
